Mam Sonando Arrested for ‘Insurrection’
Mam Sonando, beleaguered owner of the independent Beehive Radio station, was arrested at his Phnom Penh home yesterday morning on a raft of charges relating to a so-called secessionist movement that authorities supposedly disbanded in Kratie earlier this year. More than a dozen plainclothes and uniformed police descended on Mr. Sonando’s home, which doubles as the headquarters for his Association of Democrats as well as the Beehive Radio studio, and remanded him to the custody of the Ministry of Interior, where he remained as of yesterday evening. “It’s not to question him, but according to the arrest warrant, we order to the public authority to send him to prison. We are ready to send him to prison, and we are dealing with his paperwork,” Ministry of Interior spokesman Lieutenant General Khieu Sopheak said yesterday.
